It seems like ages ago, but that is more a sign of how far the women in our Wise Women for Clinton have come, and how much we’ve grown in numbers, rather than a reflection of real time.
My Medium.com piece was published during a perfect storm of conditions, and reflects that moment. Not that it makes the content any less relevant today! As more members came into our group, and more wisdom poured in, it became glaringly clear that a great deal of the women were not speaking publicly about their support.
For many this election season was the first time they found themselves supporting a candidate other than their spouses, children, parents, and closest friends. So it felt weird to be enthusiastic about the opposing candidate in the face of their loved ones’ enthusiasm. It didn’t help that across a lot of mediums, our members were seeing harsh blowback for support of anybody other than her opponent, and even some pretty drastic attacks. The prevailing thought was to hush up. At the same time the media narrative was that Hillary Clinton had votes, not love.
Being a part of a group of women who felt the safe space provided was the only place to safely express their love we knew instinctively this was a story that needed to be challenged, and a new narrative created. “Oh Hill to the Yes” was a way for the women among us to have a voice, when they had been silenced. It was a way to collect our thoughts and express our passion. It was our way to show people wrong. That she doesn’t just have our vote. She has our passion, our loyalty, and our gratitude.
Here is the article I published on March 20, 2016.
